From across the pond …

… Here’s a report from The Independent in London about the Route 66 Festival in Springfield, Ill.

I’ve been hearing from all over the road that a lot of European tourists, especially Britons, drove the Mother Road this past year. This excerpt from today’s report might explain why.

You’ll never find a more authentic way to visit “Main Street America” than to thread along a little bit of the Mother Road in a hire car with petrol at the equivalent of £2 a gallon (my emphasis). The American way of motoring ain’t dead yet.

Two pounds is equivalent to just over $3.50 at current exchange rates. To provide some perspective, a British poster on the Route 66 e-group recently reported that petrol in England was running above $7 a gallon.
