A look back, a look now, and looking forward

Erik Siemers of the Albuquerque Journal takes a look at Route 66 in the Duke City as the highway is about to mark its 80th anniversary.

It’s an interesting overview of what the Mother Road once was, what it is, and what to do in the future to keep it around.

  1. I especially liked the way he took the 66 angle from that of the various people. One of the better articles I’ve ever seen.

  2. I grew up in Albuquerque, from Sep ’50 to Sep ’62 when I left for college. I rember the “old 66” quite well, back to the days when it was a two-lane road, and so traffic could back up for miles.

I also recall when it went through town on Central Avenue, which was a continuum of motels.

I learned to ride a bike at the Route 66 Drive In, in 1951 or so. The Drive Inn was situated on the west side of town, just as R66 began the long climb up the hill on the way to Gallup.
