POPS is now open

The POPS convenience store / restaurant on Route 66 in Arcadia, Okla., tried to do what is called a “soft opening” on Monday and keep it low-key.

However, travelers and the media got wind of it quickly, including the Daily Oklahoman. So much for low-key.

The crowds continued throughout the day, confounding McClendon‘s plans for a quiet opening without any publicity. Manager Marty Doepke encountered one news crew after another as customers packed the landmark’s old fashioned lunch counter, convenience store — and grabbed up soda brands usually unheard of in this part of the country.

“We did our very best to keep this quiet, but word spread quickly,” Doepke said. “The last three or four days we had to have someone at the door to keep the public out.”

POPS is open from 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week.

I’ll be out there tomorrow to check it out and report back.

  1. Went to Pops Saturday evening for dinner. It was so good we went back Sunday for Lunch. ( they had already run out of some of their special desserts and most of the odd bottles of soda pop the days we were there) Very fast service and food is big portions, and priced fair as well. It was well worth the 150 mile trip. Highly recommended!!
