White Flag

Not many folks are traveling Route 66 this time of year. But if you are, you’d best be aware of a huge winter storm that’s about to hit northern Arizona, especially the Flagstaff region.

According to the Arizona Daily Sun, up to 2 feet of snow will fall in Flagstaff this weekend, with wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour, creating blizzard conditions. One meteorologist said it’s going to be in the top three of all snowstorms to hit the region.

That’s on top of the 21 inches that have fallen in the past week.

So, if you’re were planning on traveling in that area this weekend, it might be advisable to make alternate plans.

  1. If the NWS predictions are on target, it should all be cleaned up by late Saturday (I’m heading to Holbrook on Sunday). But for tonight and on into tomorrow, it’s shut down solid from west of Seligman all the way over to Winslow.

  2. Final total for Flagstaff: just short of five FEET of snow. Considering many far-more-northerly US locations don’t see that much all year, that’s saying something. And I-40 & Route 66 are open again.

  3. Richard is right- 54 inches of snow over 5 days! The snow removal has gone well, and most stores, schools and government offices are open again (about a dozen business roofs collapsed). At one point virtually every road to Flagstaff was closed (I-17, I-40, 180 and 89a). This is now the second biggest snow storm in Flagstaff’s history behind the 7′ monster of 1967. More on the way- as much as 9 inches by Thursday. You might want to take that southern route…. if you “plan to motor west”.
    Is it Spring yet?
