Tulsa soon will beef up section of East 11th Street

The City of Tulsa has awarded a contract to build decorative streetscaping and a wayfinding sign on 11th Street between 89th East Avenue and Garnett Road area. Construction should begin by March 1, according to city planner Dennis Whitaker.

Whitaker says the project should take about 120 days, which means a completion time of late June to early July.

He wrote in an email:

This includes a great interpretive feature at 11th & Mingo similar to what we have at the Plaza on the river and tells the story of the two alignments, the evolution of motor courts, the Art Deco district that dog-legged thru downtown, and the dog-leg thru the Kendall Whittier early business area and Circle Cinema.

This wayfinding sign will be installed near 11th Street and Mingo Road:

This and other Route 66 projects in Tulsa are being paid with the Vision 2025 sales tax. The city eventually will build Route 66 “gateways” at 11th Street near Interstate 44, and on Southwest Boulevard near Crystal City Shopping Center. A Route 66 Experience museum near the 11th Street Bridge and the Arkansas River also is in the works.
