New park in Pontiac will have a Route 66 theme

Pontiac, Ill., likely will add another Mother Road attraction in the coming months — a Route 66 Celebration Park in downtown, according to a city-council story in the Pontiac Daily Leader.

The park will be south of the courthouse. According to the newspaper:

The council also looked at several conceptual designs for the new downtown park south of the courthouse that will include a walkway area, two fountains and a number “66” in a grassy area of the park. The round parts of each six would be shallow pools with the fountains spraying between them.

“These are just concepts, but we need to have contracts ready to go by the end of June,” said Russell.

An artist’s rendering of one of the park designs can be seen here.

Pontiac hosts the Illinois Route 66 Hall of Fame and Museum, the Pontiac Oakland Automotive MuseumLivingston County War Museum, and the International Walldog Mural Museum. It also has seen a huge surge in tourism in the past few years, mostly because of Route 66.
