Whittier Square area in Tulsa named to National Register

Whittier Square Historic District, which includes an older alignment of Route 66 in Tulsa, was named to the National Register of Historic Places effective June 15, according to an email today from the National Park Service.

The roughly four-block-square area is bounded by Lewis Avenue to the east, First Avenue to the south, Zunis Avenue to the west, and Interstate 244 to the north. A 1926-32 alignment of Route 66 passes through at Lewis and First.

The district includes this Phillips 66 cottage-style station, built in 1929 at 2224 E. Admiral Blvd.

Prominent in the district is the Ziegler Art & Frame building, which has operated for nearly 40 years.

But the crown jewel of the district is the Circle Cinema, which opened in 1928. The Circle has become Tulsa’s go-to place for independent, art, and documentary films. It, too, is on the National Register. More about the Circle’s history can be found here.
