The historic Wagon Wheel Motel in Cuba, Mo., added a second neon sign to its property, according to a post on its Facebook page on Wednesday.
The sign, fashioned in part from metal wheels welded together, stands on the east side of the property, near the popular Missouri Hick Bar-B-Que restaurant.
The second sign greets westbound travelers on Route 66. The Wagon Wheel is keeping its long-standing neon sign on the west side of the property, which greets eastbound drivers.
The motel’s Facebook page also posted several photos of the installation of the sign. According to the page, Charlie Yowell donated the metal wheels for the structure.
The motel’s owner, Connie Echols, had hinted for many months she was making a new neon sign for the 1934 property.
Echols bought the well-preserved property in 2009, but made a bunch of much-needed improvements to it as well. It’s now one of the must-stop lodging options on Route 66.
