Galena bordello featured in upcoming film

Three filmmakers announced this week the first offering of their latest project, “Shadows on 66,” will be released via DVD and download Sept. 13. The first film in a series will feature Galena’s Murder Bordello of Galena, Kan.

The filmmakers are Brad and Barry Klinge of Discovery Channel’s “Ghost Lab” and  Chip Coffey of A&E’s “Paranormal State” and “Psychic Kids.”

According to a comment by Klinge in a news release:

“The film project is centered on locations along the famous Route 66. We wanted to investigate stories that have never been heard but are true Americana — and what better place to find these stories than on the mother road. […] This isn’t just a paranormal show. That’s just part of  the package. We mix comedy, history, polar opposite personalities, and yes—downright scary stuff — all into one. You have never seen anything like it.”

Michael Wallis, author of “Route 66: The Mother Road” and voice of the Sheriff of Radiator Springs in “Cars,” will narrate the “Shadows on 66” series.

According to the release, future episodes of “Shadows on 66” will be released in the future. The series is produced by Nine Diamond Productions in San Antonio in association with Studio Lychee of Austin.

Galena’s Murder Bordello purportedly served as a house of prostitution in the late 19th and early 20th century. A few months ago, the owner extensively shored up and renovated the long-abandoned home into period appearance and opened it for paranormal tours. The house sits across old Route 66 from Cars on the Route (formerly 4 Women on the Route).

It initially was said the house was owned by convicted murderer and bordello madam Ma Staffleback, but later historical research put those claims in doubt.

  1. I got a vip tour of the house during the Rt. 66 Festival by Rene Charles and it is OUTSTANDING !!! Special thanks to Brian Jordan for all of his effort on this project !!!!!! Thanks for posting this Ron !!!!

  2. I am given to understand NOW that the the so-called “Murder Bordello” has EVERYTHING to do with what the collection of carved wooden crows south of the building is called (a group of crows is called a “murder”) and NOTHING to do with the unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another.

This gossamer tale is getting stretched p-r-e-t-t-y thin.

Also loved overhearing the explanations to their kids by Mom and Dad explaing what a “bordello” is – as they visited the family-friendly gas station attraction, literally across the street – during the recent festival. Priceless!

  3. Sounds exciting. Murders or no murders the Haunted Bordello is a lovely bed and breakfast in the beautiful town of Galena. The town is a must stop and see for any traveler.

    1. Um, Christy — from THEIR own Facebook ticketing page…

“Either way, you can experience an entire night in the bordello seeking them on your very own. This is not a hotel stay. This is not a bed and breakfast.”

Don’t think they want to open that thorny B&B/hotel can of worms; there are all those sticky zoning, building code, taxation, etc. issues.

Maybe you have other information you can share?
