More about Springfield’s mosaic mural

The Springfield News-Leader produced this video about the Route 66 mural in Springfield, Mo., which was created in 2001 with the guidance of local artist Christine Schilling with dozens of young artists:

More about the project:

Campbell Elementary School students were among the young artists who participated in the project. The Campbell students tied the art into their science curriculum. As they learned about the animals native to Jordan Creek, the students used ceramic tiles to create fish, lizards and flowers that can still be seen along the wall.

Other students created BMX bike riders and skateboarders that can be seen “zooming” into the future.

The project was initiated by the Missouri Probation and Parole’s Southwest Missouri Citizens Advisory Board. The pieces were created mostly by young people who may not otherwise feel part of their community.

Among the organizations involved were Bailey Alternative School, Boys and Girls Town, Solutions, Division of Youth Services, Gay and Lesbian Community Center of the Ozarks, Probation and Parole and Boys & Girls Clubs.

The mural is on West College Street (aka Route 66), a few blocks east of South Kansas Expressway.
