Here’s a blast from the past — a Levi’s commercial, reputedly from 1976, with “Route 66” as the theme:

Several observations and some background:

  • Because this commercial is nearly three minutes long, I wonder when this commercial would have aired. In Europe, perhaps? Maybe in theaters?
  • The ad exuded a “Thelma and Louise” vibe 15 years before the movie.
  • It was directed by Adrian Lyne, who later gained notice for directing “Flashdance” and “Fatal Attraction.”
  • The woman with the curly hair is Susie Juul, who apparently is still modeling all these years later. Juul said in a YouTube comment her cohort in the ad had died; no other information was available.
  • During the 1970s, Levi’s once made 501 jeans that later were called “Route 66” jeans by collectors because of a “6” on the button stamping.
  • Michael Lee, a major ad agency director for years, chose the ad as one of his favorites ever.
