The Old Road Up La Bajada Hill

This new video of a snow-dusted La Bajada Hill south of Santa Fe, New Mexico, uses a drone to film footage from the air.

The video contains interesting and seldom-seen angles — including a wrecked car in the beginning of the video. I’ve hiked La Bajada Hill three times and have never seen that car. Let’s hope there wasn’t someone driving when it crashed. Possibly a rancher let it roll off the cliff as a crude form of disposal after it broke down 70-odd years ago.

So … does anyone know about the car and why it’s there? Chime in by using the comments field.

Roamin’ Rich Dinkela also has used a drone in some of his Route 66 video explorations.

Despite its many switchbacks, La Bajada Hill served as Route 66 from 1926 to 1932. It’s now badly eroded, and only the most-seasoned motorists with four-wheel drive should attempt to drive it. Hiking is the best — and safest — way to enjoy the 1.5-mile stretch.
