Co-owner of Becky’s Barn dies

Becky Hargett, co-owner of Becky’s Barn antique store, visitors center and snack shop on old Route 66 near Auburn, Illinois, died Saturday, according to her husband Rick.

Rick Hargett posted this message on Facebook on Saturday afternoon:

Becky’s Barn is especially notable for not what it is (although there’s plenty special about it, too), but where it is. It sits on the original 1931 brick alignment of Route 66 that’s 1.4 miles long and remains the only surviving brick Route 66 segment in Illinois.

Here’s a video produced by WAND-TV a couple of years ago of Becky’s Barn, the Hargetts and the brick road:

I’ll post obituary information as soon as I get it.

  1. Rick, my wife and I were saddened to read of the passing of your wife Becky. Both of you are part of our memories of our Route 66 trip in Sept 2014. We enjoyed the time chatting with the both of you and talking about the history of the area. The Brick from the old 66 that Becky gave to me is sitting front and center on my book shelf. A constant reminder of our time at the barn and our trip. May the passing of time make it a little easier for you, but may the memories of Becky always be in your heart and mind.
