Pacific landmark will reopen by early 2016

Jensen's Point

The city of Pacific, Missouri, closed on its purchase of the historic Jensen’s Point on May 28 and is slated to reopen it to the public as a city park in February after some improvements, according to the Washington Missourian.

The purchase was made possible by a $350,000 grant from St. Louis County Parks. The city also has $85,000 available for improvements to the grounds. The Great Rivers Greenway, Ozark Trail Association, and Shaw Nature Reserve have committed to helping with the work.

Jensen’s Point was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and opened in 1941. The landmark was named after Lars Peter Jensen, the first manager of Shaw’s Garden, aka Missouri Botanical Garden, and president of the Henry Shaw Gardenway Association that designed it to beautify Route 66 in that region.

Jensen’s Point was in private ownership beginning in the 1990s by Wayne Winchester, owner of Wintec Pharmaceuticals. Winchester made several improvements to the property and kept it from going into deep decay.

  1. I have often thought it would be great to go up there as I have driven by. Now, I can. Thanks Pacific.
