Route 66 tourist meets his rescuer

An Australian motorcyclist who wiped out on a curve on Route 66 in New Mexico nearly two years ago might have died if not for the quick actions of an emergency medical technician on the scene.

Last week, that tourist, Graeme Nicholas, had an emotional meeting with that EMT, according to a report by KOAT-TV in Albuquerque.

Speechless, with tears in his eyes, he came face to face with his hero, Monique Shupla, an EMT with the Acoma Fire Department.

“She’s my god,” said Nicholas. “She’s the one that saved me.” […]

When officials found him, Shupla said they knew he didn’t have long, so she made a quick call for a medivac helicopter to fly Nicholas to University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque.

“That call to call a helicopter was the most important decision in my life,” Nicholas said.

The crash occurred in the Acoma Pueblo area, west of Albuquerque. KOAT was there with cameras during the reunion, including a grateful Nicholas hugging the woman.
