Cottage Cafe aims to feed customers, help charities

Money paid by customers at the Cottage Cafe in Phillipsburg, Missouri, not only covers the expenses of the restaurant, but some of it goes to seven nonprofit organizations.

Vicky Owens owns the restaurant at 201 W. Pine St. in Phillipsburg, just a few hundred yards southeast from where Route 66 turns west onto Route CC.

The restaurant has been for weeks, but a new website for it went live this week.

The Lebanon Daily Record reports:

Along with offering the community some mouth watering meals, The Cottage Cafe is also trying to make a difference in the world. With every customer purchase, a percentage of the profit goes to help one of seven foundations and organizations ranging from eye care and housing of children to rescuing boys and girls from sex trafficking around the world.

“We like to say that if you dine with us today, you will make a positive difference in the lives of others tomorrow,” Owens said. […]

“Because they choose to eat with me today at the cafe, somebody else in another place is going to be able to eat tomorrow. In a way, people aren’t just buying something for themselves. They’re giving to others,” she said.

I asked the Cottage Cafe to what organizations they’re giving money. Here they are:

  • Reliv Kalogris Foundation: It provides nutritional supplements to needy people around the world, especially children.
  • Rapha House: It rescues and rehabilitates children who are sexually exploited or involved in sex trafficking.
  • Coconut Boy: It aims to get young boys off the streets of Cambodia and help them earn an income for life.
  • CIY medical missions: It provides medical, dental and eye care for people in Cambodia.
  • Local food pantry
  • Watoto Children’s Homes: It provides after-care for boys rescued from sex trafficking.
  • Black Box International: It seeks to rehabilitate sex-trafficked boys age 16 and younger.

The menu offers soups, salads and sandwiches, with treats such as pie from time to time. Fall hours are from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. from Tuesday through Saturday. Hours may expand to include breakfast during the busier spring and summer months.

Blessed Mary’s in Groom, Texas, was the closest thing to a nonprofit restaurant I can recall on Route 66. It was open 10 years ago, but I think it’s closed now.

  1. I just want to say a big THANK YOU to Vicky Owens and her staff for supporting all those wonderful charities who are doing their bit to try to help those who have not had the great opportunities in life that we have all had. Keep up your fantastic work and long may the Cottage Cafe prosper.
