Longtime roadies who traveled the Texas Panhandle may remember Rocky Drake, who died suddenly at age 58 on Friday.

Drake was the husband of former Oldham County Chamber of Commerce director Linda Drake, who were based in Vega, Texas, for years. Linda, who survives, was heavily involved in promoting in Route 66, and she and Rocky often showed up at Route 66 gatherings.

The ever-affable Rocky was in food-service sales for a time, including helping Rory Schepisi when she was building her Boot Hill Saloon & Grill in Vega from scratch.

A few years ago, the Drakes moved to Yukon, Oklahoma, near Oklahoma City. More from the obituary from McNeil Funeral Service:

He was preceded in death by his parents, step-father Earnest Hauser, daughter Lisa Patchen, sister Frances Sebring, and niece Donna Callison and her children Taylor and Cale Callison. Rocky is survived by his wife Linda of Yukon, two daughters Lora Jean Drake of Yukon and Madison Kay Drake of Tulsa; one step daughter April Penilla and husband Hugo of Waco, TX; four step sons Rusty Davis and wife Ronda of Abilene, TX, Richard Davis and wife Heidi of Vega, TX, Nathan Davis and wife Shawna of Vega, TX and Daniel Davis and wife Angela of Waynesville, MO; seventeen grandchildren; one brother Ray Hauser of Marland, OK; and one sister Louise Thompson-Garrett and husband Jim of Mustang, OK.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints in Mustang, Oklahoma. He will be buried at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Oklahoma City.

  1. Sad news for sure. Rocky was always fun to be around. I got to spend time with him, as well as Linda and their family, a few times when in their area. I remember in fact that he was able to get me,for my wife,some Sweet Potato Fries.
    Great memories. Our prayers go out to Linda and the family.
