TV show goes ghost-hunting at Grand Canyon Caverns

Route 66 Grand Canyon Caverns 099

Grand Canyon Caverns on Route 66 near Peach Springs, Arizona, will be the subject of an episode of the Travel Channel’s “Ghost Adventures,” according to the Kingman Daily Miner.

Route 66 Paranormal Investigators, based in Kingman, worked with show host Zak Bagans and a film crew for about a week at the caverns. The episode is expected to air later this year; “Ghost Adventures” airs Saturday nights.

Route 66 Paranormal Investigators also has checked Route 66’s Powerhouse Museum and Hotel Brunswick, both in Kingman on Route 66.

The caverns’ back story gives a glimpse on why paranormal investigators are interested:

The Grand Canyon Caverns were officially discovered in 1927 by Walter Peck, but may have been discovered by mistake a decade earlier by a group of Hualapai tribal members. Two bodies were found in the cave when Peck found it, both later confirmed to be two brothers who died from the flu. They were buried in what was thought to be a hole in the ground, but was actually the entrance to the caverns.

Years later, in the 1970’s, the then-general manager Gary Ringsby was said to have hung himself in what is known as the “bunk house.”

Both the brothers, Ringsby, and Peck himself are rumored to haunt the caverns today, and have been the targets of many paranormal investigators over the years.

The caverns, which hosts a nightly ghost walk, explains what visitors have reputedly experienced:

The most popular sighting is seeing a man, believed to be ghost of Walter Peck at the top and bottom of the elevator shaft, opening the doors at different times. [… T]he whispering sounds of the Indians can often be heard in the caverns when one listens according to reports. And at night in the darkness of the caverns, you do hear things that are not supposed to be heard according to reports. Overnight guess in the caverns suite have also reported seeing what appears to be shadows of Indian figures moving in a dance formation, circular on the rocks, as well as a distant chanting. Other reports have been of seeing images of the hanging of a body at the top of the caverns (A person did so 30 years ago) the list does go on.

A pananormal team from California also investigated in 2012. Here’s a compilation video of what it allegedly found:
