Frontier Motel caretakers resign abruptly

Frontier Motel, Truxton, AZ

Allen and Stacy (Lynette) Greer, caretakers for the historic Frontier Motel and Restaurant in Truxton, Arizona, resigned their positions Monday evening in a Facebook post by Allen.

The post read:

Effective immediately, Stacy (Lynette) and I are no longer affiliated with the Frontier Motel and Cafe. We didn’t arrive at this decision lightly. We’ve wrung our hands over what to do for over a year but the situation with the property owner has become intolerable. We’ve finally had enough and moved on. Select members of the roadie community know what we’ve been going through and to them, our other friends and our families, thank you for all your love, help and support. For the sake of discretion I won’t mention any names but you know who you are. It’s been a very difficult time and we couldn’t have done it without you, quite literally. We are staying in the Kingman area because we love it here and we will continue to be active in the roadie community. Hopefully someday we can find another opportunity for a business on The Mother Road. So long Truxton, we’ll miss you.

Allen Greer declined to elaborate in an email late Monday on the reasons he and Stacy — both avid history buffs — walked away from the property.

The couple announced they had become the complex’s caretakers in January 2014 for new owner Sam Murray, a Route 66 tour operator based in New Zealand. Murray purchased the motel and restaurant in November 2013. Longtime co-owner Mildred Barker died in August 2012 at age 87.

Murray said in an interview in late 2013 he’d planned to reopen the motel by mid-2014 after some remodeling and eventually reopen the old gas station across the road as a tavern.

However, save for the motel’s lobby being used as a visitors center and souvenir shop, nothing else on the Frontier property reopened.

Murray declined late Monday to comment in a text, saying he needed to contact Allen first. No other comment came as of Tuesday morning.

Ray and Mildred Barker purchased the Truxton cafe and its attached motel in 1957. Ray died in 1990. The cafe closed shortly before Mildred’s death, but the motel continued operating until the change in ownership.
