Fire damages Wildorado motel

Royal Inn fire, Wildorado

A suspected electrical fire Tuesday destroyed much of the Royal Inn, one of the original Route 66 businesses in Wildorado, Texas, reported the Amarillo Globe-News.

The first call came into Oldham County Sheriff’s Office at 9:48 a.m. and the fire was not under control until 2 p.m. Firefighters continued to douse hotspots at the motel at 5:30 p.m.

“Both wings of the motel were on fire, and we managed to save about 10 to 12 rooms, but the rest were pretty heavily damaged,” Potter County Fire Chief Richard Lake said.

The newspaper said the blaze destroyed the south end of the L-shaped motel. Wind and a gabled roof that was added to the structure hampered firefighters.

KFDA-TV in Amarillo also shot some footage from the scene:

The TV station reported four people were overnight guests at the motel, but none was staying in the affected section. No one was hurt.

At one point, the 27-room motel was for sale, but it was taken off the market about a year ago.
