Lexington hosting tour of three businesses Saturday

The city of Lexington, Illinois, is hosting a tour and specials Saturday for three new businesses in town along its Route 66 corridor.

The town is known for its Memory Lane of original Route 66 and its neon arrow directing travelers on newer Route 66 into its downtown.

According to a news release from the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway:

The three businesses are located at or near the intersection of Main Street and Historic Route 66 in Lexington: Thrift Avenue, 1103 W. Main Street; Kelly’s on 66, 905 W. Main Street & Castle Gardens, 1280 P.J. Keller Highway. The public is welcome – free admission, no reservations required. 10% Off coupon flyers are available at all three locations, and must be redeemed the day of the event, Saturday, November 4th through Saturday, November 11th, 2017.

The schedule goes as follows:

1 p.m.Thrift Avenue thrift shop, ribbon-cutting by chamber of commerce and grand opening, with 10 percent all merchandise from Nov. 4 to Nov. 11. The store also recently commissioned a new mural from a local teenager.

LunchtimeKelly’s on 66, 10 percent discount during regular hours from Nov. 4 to Nov. 11. The family-friendly restaurant is in the historic building that once was home to Skelley’s Service Station and Toby’s Mesa Cafe.It offers pizza, pies and cakes made from scratch, as well as the occasional “blue plate special.” It is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

2-4 p.m.Castle Gardens Event Venue open house. It is home to an 1898 Queen Anne-style home that features over 40 acres of gardens and native prairie, including the formal garden and Robert Cumpstom sculpture garden. Castle Gardens will have live music by the New Vintage Band and light refreshments at its Carousel Barn. It also will offer 10 percent off bookings for 2018.

The 10-percent-off vouchers will be offered at all three locations.

I’m not sure who thought of this, but showcasing three new businesses at the same time within a Route 66 town is a good idea, and it probably will be copied by others.

  1. Lexington is surely a town that knows its Route 66 heritage. Glad to see so many towns embracing that heritage these days.

We ate at Kelly’s a couple weeks ago and enjoyed the food, friendly folks and atmosphere. So glad the old Filling Station restaurant is now open again.

I am definitely interested in chek=cking out the Castle Gardens.
