Texas approves Route 66 license plate

The state of Texas this month approved a Route 66 specialty license plate, and proceeds from its sale will support a Route 66 association in the Lone Star State.

According to KTRE-TV, in Lufkin, Texas:

The Route 66 design, by My Plates, will include a Texas US.66 road sign and will include the signature Route 66 slogan “Get Your Kicks.” The design celebrates Texas’s connection to Route 66 which cuts through the panhandle of Texas. The plate design was proposed as a result of a survey done in 2017 where hundreds of people showed their support for the design. Texas would join several other states such as Illinois, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona that have a license plate dedicated to Route 66.

“This is such an iconic route in the U.S, so it’s time that Texas also provide a Route 66 plate for all those travelers, adventurers, desperadoes and dreamers who have had the chance to experience this historic route to proudly show their support on their bumpers” said Steve Farrar, President of My Plates.

Ten percent of the proceeds from the plate’s sales will benefit the Old Texas Route 66 Association Fund.

My Plates is accepting pre-orders for the plate. It needs 200 orders to begin production. For more information on the Route 66 plates, go here.

Prices for the plate range from $32 to $89 a year for pre-orders, depending on how much personalization is sought.

MyPlates.com announced the bid to produce the Route 66 plate in Texas last summer.
