Castaneda Hotel plans to fully reopen by June 21

Workers plan to finish a multiyear restoration of the historic Castaneda Hotel in Las Vegas, New Mexico, by spring and fully reopen it by June 21, according to a video posted Tuesday on the hotel’s blog.

The hotel hopes to have the south wing ready for overnight occupancy by March and will take reservations for that part in February. To get on the reservations list, go here.

Here’s the video of the hotel’s to-do list for 2019:

Obviously, with the complexity inherent in historic renovation, the dates shouldn’t be set in stone. But it’s clear the rebirth of the Castaneda Hotel is not far away.

If you’re itching to keep abreast of the work in progress, the hotel’s blog is your best bet. It’s updated with new posts frequently.

Allan Affeldt, savior of La Posada in Winslow, Arizona, purchased Castaneda Hotel, also known as La Castaneda or Hotel Castaneda, in 2014. The Castaneda Hotel was built in 1898 as a Harvey House, and it closed in 1948, although parts of it were converted to other purposes, including a bar.

Affeldt also purchased the Plaza Hotel, built in 1882 in downtown Las Vegas, about a mile west of the Castaneda.

In a recent Facebook post, La Posada noted it connects with the Castaneda Hotel by train for as little as $68 one way.

Las Vegas sits a few miles from old Route 66 but has become a common side trip for travelers exploring the 1926-1937 alignment of the road that looped to Santa Fe.
