Some proceeds from Oklahoma Lt. Gov. Matt Pinnell’s annual Luau on the Green and golf tournament later this month will benefit the historic Threatt Filling Station along Route 66 near Luther, Oklahoma.
The family that owns the station made the announcement on Facebook a few days ago. They stated:
We are honored, thankful and excited as a family! A portion of the proceeds generated will go towards our restoration efforts. Moving us closer to being your next roadside attraction stop on the historical Route 66!
Kirby Smith, a spokeswoman for the lieutenant governor, said in an email Monday that organizers plan to give 10% of the proceeds from the Sept. 24-25 event to the station. Registrations start at $250, and sponsorships range from $400 to $5,000.
The event will be held at Shangri-La Resort near Afton, Oklahoma. More about it may be found here.
The Threatt family seeks to repair the long-closed station and reopen it as a historical and Route 66 museum.
Built by Allen Threatt in 1915, the gas station remains one of the few surviving African-American-owned businesses along Route 66. The bungalow-style station, made of rock from the Threatt farm’s quarry, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.
The Threatt Filling Station operated until the early 1960s, when it was converted into living quarters.
