Gearhead Curios in Galena plans to add neon lighting by April

The owners of Gearhead Curios along Route 66 in Galena, Kansas, said on social media Thursday they plan to install neon lighting at their former gas station by April 21.

The social media post included a rendering of the neon added to an existing photo of the site:

Gearhead Curios said anyone who wants to help “adopt” the neon is welcome. I asked how Route 66 enthusiasts could do that:

They can send me a message via FB or they can contact Missouri Neon directly and submit a donation. MO Neon, Tricia Garver, 417.799.1809, job # 85742. Thanks for your support.

A lighting ceremony will be announced later.

Proprietor Aaron Perry last year added a replica of Doc Hudson from the Disney-Pixar animated movie “Cars” to the store at Sixth and Main streets in downtown Galena. It sits less than a half-mile down old Route 66 from Cars on the Route, which contains a replica of Tow Mater from the film and the original 1951 International boom truck that inspired the character.

Perry bought the 1939 gas station in fall 2018 so he could sell his “gearhead” artwork (hence the name) and Route 66 souvenirs.
