Historic Eagle Rock theater in Los Angeles to reopen, along with new video store

The historic Eagle Theatre in the Eagle Rock neighborhood of Los Angeles eventually will reopen with an attached video store after fundraising efforts for the project are completed.

The Vidiots Foundation is raising money for the theater’s refurbishment. Vidiots also will open a store there with 50,000 DVDs and Blu-ray discs for rent.

KABC-TV in Los Angeles reports:

No reopening date is set, but the foundation’s officers hope to have the theater open by year’s end. Vidiots hoped to have it open last year, but the COVID-19 pandemic slowed that effort.

According to an earlier story in the Hollywood Reporter:

With almost 10,000 square feet of entertainment and educational space, Vidiots will operate its storefront seven days a week, as well as offering daily screenings and special programs. A smaller, 50-seat theater will be used for screenings, workshops and receptions.

According to Cinema Treasures, the formerly 900-seat theatre originally opened as the Yosemite Theatre in 1929. It became the New Eagle Theatre in 1937, then shortened the name to Eagle Theatre in 1940.

It closed in 2001 and became a church for a while. The church moved out about two years ago.
