Howdy Burger is 31st sign to benefit from Tulsa’s Route 66 neon sign grant program

The Howdy Burger restaurant on the 11th Street alignment of Route 66 in Tulsa is the 31st sign to be created or renovated through the city’s Route 66 neon sign grant program.

The sign is an animated design, with its main character tossing a lasso.

Howdy Burger is at 1516 E. 11th St. (aka Route 66) in a former Lotaburger restaurant.

Howdy Burger originally started in the Mother Road Market restaurant incubator and gained popularity quickly. It is owned by the McNellie’s Group, which has launched several restaurants in the city.

About a dozen more signs are in the fabrication, installation, or permitting process. Dennis Whitaker of the city’s planning office sent over this list of completed signs:

With so many neon signs created or restored in Tulsa, I suspect the city of Albuquerque is going to look over its shoulder pretty soon. Whitaker acknowledged in an earlier email that Albuquerque was a model in how Tulsa’s Route 66 corridor should look.
