NOTE: This has been corrected from its earlier version. The Macoupin County spokeswoman who initially called me was wrong; the county board had not yet voted to save the bridge. The board will vote on the matter Nov. 8, and she said passage is likely because the board chairman supports the proposal. The Macoupin County … Continue reading Route 66 bridge is probably saved

The heartwarming tale of Tour de Clarence
This is a partial summary, but Scott May's blog has the story about a homeless veteran named Clarence. Clarence was living in an RV park in the Route 66 town of Tucumcari, N.M., with a moped as his only form of transporation. Clarence was befriended by bikers attending the Mother Road Rally in Tucumcari. Later, … Continue reading The heartwarming tale of Tour de Clarence
Getting Smart on Route 66
Annette of Toronto has a blog called SCOOT, or Smart Car Owners of Toronto. The Smart car is a dinky (and cute) vehicle made by DaimlerChrysler that gets fantastic mileage. An assignment to photograph in black and white the people and places of Route 66 for National Geographic Explorer is now a book in the making. There's no word on … Continue reading A Route 66 photography book is in the works

I've eaten a wonderful breakfast in the Turquoise Room, and after perusing … Continue reading La Posada’s chef and shepherd
From across the pond …
... Here's a report from The Independent in London about the Route 66 Festival in Springfield, Ill.I've been hearing from all over the road that a lot of European tourists, especially Britons, drove the Mother Road this past year. This excerpt from today's report might explain why. You'll never find a more authentic way to … Continue reading From across the pond …
