Oklahoma restaurants told to butt out

Oklahoma restaurants face a fast-approaching deadline of March 1 to either go smoke-free or install complex ventilation systems away from non-smokers. The Sapulpa Herald reports that several area Route 66 restaurants, including the former Rivett's Route 66 Cafe and Freddie's Barbecue and Steak House, will be affected. Ed "Tex" Slyman of Freddie's added a ventilated … Continue reading Oklahoma restaurants told to butt out

Motoring west … on the interstate, Part 2

Nick Clooney's second part of his story for the Cincinnati Post of driving west on Route 66 ... er, I-40, is online. Again, there's not much of interest except for his conversation with a tourism worker in Needles, Calif. Nick even managed to miss seeing any of the wildfires plaguing Oklahoma.

Enough road music to fill an iPod

I'd heard about this Web site some months ago, but Sean Gleeson's blog reminded me of it: The Federal Highway Administration maintains a site that catalogues road songs. It's frequently updated, and you can e-mail to suggest tunes that aren't on the list. Giving the site a once-over, it appears Neil Young, James Taylor, Bruce … Continue reading Enough road music to fill an iPod

For you classical-music roadies

Sony Classical recently released a series of Drive Time CDs, including one for Route 66. Here's a description of the album: ROUTE 66. It's the all-American drive -- America's Main Street, the "mother road" of Easy Rider. Route 66 stretches some 2,400 miles across the vastness of the American West, from Chicago to California. For … Continue reading For you classical-music roadies

San Bernardino will have Route 66 mural

Artist Daymon Lindsey will be the one painting the wall of a building at the northeast corner of Second and E streets in San Bernardino, Calif. The San Bernardino Sun says the mural will have a 1930s, Route 66 theme. Sketches show a festive scene with two cars parked near tents with men in derby-style … Continue reading San Bernardino will have Route 66 mural

Hope they have an exercise plan

Eckleburg + Grumblecake of the Duke City Fix blog have vowed to dine at every one of Albuquerque's Central Avenue restaurants in 2006. From Tramway to Coors. The good, the bad, and the ugly. Our path may at times veer off of Central to include other restaurants in Old Town or on side streets we … Continue reading Hope they have an exercise plan

Motoring west … on the interstate

The headline on this Cincinnati Post story by Nick Clooney says: "Motoring west along Route 66." I guess the word "along" makes it accurate, since he didn't do any actual driving on the Mother Road itself, but on Interstate 44 instead. Considering how dull the story is (and the drive), it make me wonder why … Continue reading Motoring west … on the interstate

Byway is the highway

The Oakville-Mehlville Journal in Missouri reported additional details about Route 66 in Missouri recently being designated a scenic byway. We reported about the initial announcement in November. The Route 66 Association of Missouri and the Missouri Department of Transportation worked for several years to acquire the designation. Scenic byway status allows communities and groups to … Continue reading Byway is the highway

Avalon pulling up steaks

The once-notorious Avalon Steakhouse, just off Old Route 66 between Tulsa and Sapulpa, served its last meal in its current building Saturday night. Avalon is moving into a new building one block north later this month, according to the Tulsa World (subscription). It's a tame place now, with an excellence in steaks to which I … Continue reading Avalon pulling up steaks

Route 66 News gets streamlined

I decided to tweak Route 66 News this weekend, mainly the links. I hope it's more useful now. I originally envisioned this site having about 75 links down the side. But I underestimated Route 66's presence on the Internet, and ended up with more than 250. That was too unwieldy, and the links were listed … Continue reading Route 66 News gets streamlined
