Three Route 66 properties in Illinois named to National Register

The Associated Press reported that nine properties were designated to the National Register of Historic Places, including three restaurants on Route 66.

The Route 66 properties are:

  • The Ariston Cafe, which opened in Carlinville in 1924 and moved to its present location on Route 66 in Litchfield in 1935.
  • Dell Rhea's Chicken Basket near Hinsdale, which was built in 1946.
  • Lou Mitchell's in Chicago, which started in 1923 and completed construction on its current building in 1949.

All of them are worthy additions to the Register.

Also, a section of Illinois 53 between Joliet and Wilmington also was added to the register. It also was an alignment of historic Route 66.
