Paint the town red — and other colors

The Walldogs, a group of more than 150 mural painters, is going to paint murals on 17 buildings in Pontiac, Ill., as part of Murals on Main Street and the city’s Heritage Days on June 25-28, reports the Pontiac Daily Leader.

Seventeen locations for murals have been identified by the planning group, and 17 themes have been developed, including Route 66 highlighting Pontiac, Threshermen/ Agriculture, Chautauqua, the mill and the river, Rodino Square, the Interurban, Humiston contributions to the city, Jesse Fell, Chief Pontiac, and Lincoln.

A subcommittee of the planning group has assembled files, including photos, stories and advertisements, and a file has been sent to each project leader. In Walldogs, each mural has a project leader.

Sixteen project leaders from around the country, including California, Georgia, Missouri and Wisconsin, have been lined up; as of now, 12 of those are confirmed.

Diaz Sign Art in Pontiac has been leading the effort to bring the Walldogs to town. The Walldogs have also helped beautify the Route 66 towns of Lincoln and Atlanta, Ill.

  1. Maybe someday they’ll do something to the little, ol’ town of Luther, OK. It sits on 66 east of Oklahoma City. Their only interest in The Road is writing speeding tickets. It has a nice Mom-n-Pop resturant and some charming old buildings, but they do nothing to bring people in to see them.
