A giant fiberglass astronaut was erected on Monday along Route 66 in Weatherford, Oklahoma, as a way to highlight the town’s substantial space heritage.
Wichita Mountains Life posted this video of the spaceman being assembled:
The Weatherford Area Chamber of Commerce also posted photos of the installation:
The big astronaut serves as a salute to Weatherford native Thomas Stafford, who was one of 24 U.S. astronauts who flew to the moon. He died at age 93 last year.
Weatherford also is home to the Stafford Air and Space Museum, which contains a ton of artifacts from the U.S. space program and aircraft.
The city also recently erected monuments — complete with neon lighting — that play up Weatherford’s Route 66 and space history.
The city received $1 million from the Oklahoma Route 66 Commission to commission the spaceman and the monuments.
