More details emerge on forthcoming “musical road” on Route 66 in Santa Rosa

The local newspaper in Santa Rosa, New Mexico, provided more details on a “musical road” coming to town.

The city is receiving a $60,000 Route 66 centennial grant from the New Mexico Tourism Department to build two sets of musical rumble strips.

According to the Guadalupe County Communicator (subscription required):

Santa Rosa is planning two sets of strips on the western side of Historic Route 66 as it runs through town. Traffic on the eastbound lane will be treated to “Get Your Kicks On Route 66” while the westbound lane will play the Santa Rosa Lions fight song, according to Lisa Brassell, a member of the city’s Route 66 committee.

Sandbar Construction will oversee construction of the rumble strips, Steve Farmer, the city’s grant writer consultant, reported to the Santa Rosa City Council last month.

The project must be planned or completed by June 15.

A similar musical road exists along Route 66 in Tijeras, New Mexico. Those rumble strips play “America the Beautiful” at 45 mph, though reports indicate it isn’t working as well as it once did due to age and weathering. The so-called “Musical Highway” or “Singing Road” there was built in 2014.
