Rod’s Steak House in Williams reopens after years-long closure

The historic Rod’s Steak House in Williams, Arizona, reopened Saturday under new ownership after it shuttered during the COVID-19 pandemic several years ago.

Kennelly Concepts spent months remodeling and restoring the Route 66 landmark, which dates to 1946.

Williams Mayor Don Dent, former Rod’s owner Lawrence Sanchez and Tom Kennelly celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the reopening.

According to a news release:

The remodel, which included fresh updates to both the dining room and exterior, was designed to preserve the nostalgia and character of Rod’s while making improvements for today’s guests. From newly painted interiors to refreshed seating and updated touches, every detail was made with care to honor the restaurant’s history while preparing it for decades to come.

“Rod’s Steak House has been here a long time; today is actually the 79th anniversary, which is why we chose Aug. 23,” said Tom Kennelly of Kennelly Concepts. “We have all worked really hard to bring this together. All the support we’re getting from the community means a lot. This place will last another 80 years for sure.”

Rod’s Steak House has always been rooted in history. Founded in 1946 by Rod Graves, the restaurant quickly became a favorite stop along the Mother Road. In the 1960s, it was taken over by Jim Pickens, who carried forward Rod’s legacy for many years. Later, Lawrence and Stella Sanchez cared for the restaurant, continuing its tradition of hearty meals and warm hospitality. Today, under the ownership of Kennelly Concepts, Rod’s begins its newest chapter — one that both honors its storied past and looks ahead to the future.

“I want to thank Tom and John Kennelly for following through with keeping this steak house as Rod’s Steak House,” said Lawrence Sanchez, the previous owner. “Here’s to the start of the 80th year.”

Rod’s, which sits at 301 E. Route 66, is open at 3 p.m. on Tuesday through Sunday.
