Kix on 66 owners buy Loretta’s Burrito Hut building in Tucumcari

The owners of the fire-damaged Kix on 66 restaurant in Tucumcari, New Mexico, have agreed in principle to buy the Loretta’s Burrito Hut building down the street and move its operations there.

If the transaction and transition go smoothly, Kix may reopen at the Loretta’s location as Sidekix on 66 as early as October.

Loretta’s Burrito Hut owner Loretta Muller said she’s tired and wants to slow down, but indicated in an interview she likely will fix up her food truck and operate her restaurant out of there.

Muller initially announced the deal in a Facebook Live post last week:

Kix on 66 followed with its own post:

A fire in April heavily damaged Kix on 66, a popular breakfast spot in Tucumcari for decades.

The restaurant building has remained closed since then as repairs proceed. A few weeks ago, Kix on 66 opened a food trailer in the parking lot, but the owners, Todd and Donna Halfhill, admitted that a brick-and-mortar site is preferable.

Kix’s owners are still working with their insurance company on what to do with its building. Tearing it down and rebuilding is one of the options, though they don’t want to do that.

Kix on 66 originally was a Denny’s restaurant until the chain opened another site closer to Interstate 40.

Loretta’s Burrito Hut is housed in the former Joe’s Back in the Day Diner, which closed after its operator encountered health problems.

Muller originally began making burritos and selling them out of the trunk of her car about 20 years ago. She then opened a food trailer and graduated to a brick-and-mortar site.
