Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway minting a 13-coin set commemorating Route 66’s centennial

The Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway recently announced the creation of a special, limited-edition, 13-coin collector set to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Route 66 in 2026.

This set will highlight the most cherished and iconic stops along the Illinois portion of the Mother Road.

The commemorative set will feature 12 coins, each showcasing a popular attraction or landmark. A 13th bonus coin will honor the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway itself.

Due to the collector nature of this item, production will be strictly limited to only 300 sets.

To guarantee authenticity and exclusivity, each coin in the set will be individually laser-engraved with the set’s number, and a Certificate of Authenticity will accompany each set.

“The centennial is an opportunity to not only celebrate the history of Route 66, but also to recognize the iconic small businesses and quirky roadside attractions that give the road its soul,” said Casey Claypool, executive director of the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway.

“This coin set is a lasting tribute to the people and places that have kept the spirit of the Mother Road alive for a century, giving enthusiasts a beautiful, tangible piece of Illinois history to cherish for the next 100 years.”

The sets are being sold exclusively through the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway. The first 100 pre-orders can get them for $199. After that, the price will be $300.

More details about how to purchase the sets are found here.

A custom-made display stand, designed to showcase the full 13-coin collection, will also be available for individual purchase.
