New Route 66 monument erected in Lawrence County, Missouri

A new Route 66 monument was recently erected along the Mother Road south of Miller in Lawrence County, Missouri.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the site last week.

According to KY3 in nearby Springfield, the monument sits near the intersection of Highway 39 and Highway 96 (aka Route 66).

“Route 66 is special because of the people involved with it and the people behind it and the stories that live on through it,“ said Brittni Bates, Director at Mt. Vernon Area Chamber of Commerce. ”I’m excited that the people of Lawrence County will get to tell their stories because of the Route 66 connection.”

There are also plans to add a gazebo and more benches at the roadside park where the new sign is located.

According to the Lawrence County Record, the monument measures 10 by 12 feet.

The project stems from a statewide initiative funded by the Missouri Route 66 Commission, which was established by the lieutenant governor’s office. The aim of the organization is to honor the history of the once great passage. In order to do that, an effort was made to place these towering signs across the span of Route 66.

The project was made possible thanks to the collaboration of multiple entities, including the Lawrence County Commission, the Mt. Vernon Area Chamber of Commerce, the Miller Lions Club, and State Representative Mitch Boggs. The sign will be continually maintained by the Miller Lions Club.
