Interstate 44 construction affecting Route 66 in Wellston, Oklahoma, was finally completed this month, reopening the highway to traffic for the first time and eliminating detours that had complicated travel through the area.
The Oklahoma Route 66 Association recently passed along information about the reopening:
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation stated that work would be ongoing in that area in 2026, but Route 66 would remain open.
Detours had been erected around Route 66 in Wellston for more than a year. The traffic problems prompted Butcher BBQ Stand in Wellston to plead for additional customers.
The $48 million project widened a section of the Turner Turnpike (aka I-44) from four to six lanes.
