Western Hills Motel in Flagstaff being converted into affordable workforce apartments

The former Western Hills Motel along Route 66 in Flagstaff, Arizona, will soon be converted into 29 apartment units by Housing Solutions of Northern Arizona.

The nonprofit organization recently purchased the motel and will rent its rooms to households making up to 80% of the area median income, which is $69,840 for a Flagstaff household of two in 2025, reported the Arizona Daily Sun.

The newspaper didn’t mention the date of the closing, but it’s so recent that Discover Flagstaff still lists the Western Hills as a lodging option.

Monthly rent will range from $1,375 to $1,625. If that sounds high, Flagstaff has long faced a severe housing shortage, with costs over 50% higher than the national average.

Western Hills is the third hotel conversion by Housing Solutions of Northern Arizona after JoJo’s Place in 2024 and Oak Wash Homes last year.

There’s no word what will happen to the Western Hills’ superb, animated neon sign.

The local tourism website reports that the Western Hills opened in 1950.
