Victorville will add County Route 66 markers in city

The City of Victorville, Calif., voted to add County Route 66 signs to help travelers seeking out the Mother Road through town, reported the Victorville Daily Press.

According to the newspaper:

On Tuesday, the Victorville City Council unanimously approved to put up signs near three locations: The California Route 66 Museum, Emma Jean’s Holland Burger Cafe and the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds, according to city spokeswoman Monica Petersen. She said she doesn’t know when installations will begin.

Paul Chassey, a board member of the California Route 66 Museum, said the signs will help tourists stay on the historic road as they drive through Victorville. A lack of signs is a common complaint among Route 66 travelers, according to the Route 66 Economic Impact Study by Rutgers University.

International tourists visiting the Victorville museum increased by about 15 percent compared to last year, Chassey said. Victorville will host the 2012 International Route 66 Festival from Aug. 9 through Aug. 12.

The County Route 66 sign program by San Bernardino County covers 240 miles, from the Arizona state line to the eastern outskirts of Victorville. The county will cover the costs of the signs in the city.

The report doesn’t indicate when the signs will be installed, but you can bet they’ll be up before the festival next month.

  1. “The county will cover the costs of the signs in the city.”
Too bad the county won’t maintain the ROAD instead of paying for signs.
The road east of Newberry Springs is in such bad shape as to be almost undriveable. 15 MPH and my bike took such a pounding that everything that was bungeed on, came off.
After that, I was petrified to try for Amboy not having any idea of the condition of the road.
It was my firt experience on 66 and it certainly cut my trip short.
