Pops will open a location in Oklahoma City’s Bricktown

An application to the Oklahoma City Planning Department indicates that Pops, based on Route 66 in Arcadia, Okla., will open a location in the city’s Bricktown area, reported The Oklahoman newspaper.

Plans show the restaurant would be next to the Chickasaw Nation’s tourism office at 1 E. Sheridan Ave., a space previously planned by the tribe for an eatery, gift shop and a Bedre Chocolates store. […]

The application to the Planning Department, which oversees the Bricktown Urban Design Commission, shows the restaurant will occupy the front half of the building’s first floor and will include lunch counters similar to those at the POPS in Arcadia.

The plans also show an outdoor dining area to the east of the restaurant in a former alley way between the building and the neighboring American Banjo Museum.

Bricktown in Oklahoma City isn’t on Route 66. However, a second prominent location may ease the crush of people seen at the Arcadia site, especially on weekends.

Pops is owned by Aubrey McClendon, the recently deposed chairman of Chesapeake Energy in Oklahoma City. He retained his title as CEO, but many news reports in recent weeks — including this one — indicate that Chesapeake teeters on the brink of financial ruin because of high-risk moves and deep debt.

Ironically, Pops may be one of the more profitable of McClendon’s recent ventures.
