This is bizarre

OK, try to follow me here. Hurra Torpedo is a Swedish band that wears matching sweatsuits, uses kitchen appliances for its music (reminding me of noise-rock band Einstürzende Neubauten) and is famous for a wacky cover of Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” (I didn’t even like the original all that much).

Ford makes a new vehicle, the Fusion, that it hopes finds a market with Generation X. So Ford brought Hurra Torpedo to the United States to do a tour of Route 66 in its new car and post the band’s antics on the Web. The tour includes stops at The Big Texan in Amarillo (which alarmed a lot of the diners).

Here’s the trailer for the documentary. Clips from the tour can be viewed here.

The whole thing gives off a Spinal Tap vibe, which is good if you’re trying to be funny but bad if you’re not.

  1. Haha! That’s great. Viral marketing at its best. Well…maybe not it’s best, but it is funny to see what the marketing folks come up with.
