About 100 people attend relighting of Cotton Boll Motel sign in Canute

Nearly 100 people witnessed the relighting Saturday of the Cotton Boll Motel sign along Route 66 in Canute, Oklahoma.

The motel no longer operates and is now a private residence. Its sign, however, glowed for the first time in decades.

Here are images from those who attended the ceremony:

About a year ago, the City of Canute was awarded an Oklahoma Route 66 Revitalization Grant of nearly $700,000 to restore the Cotton Boll sign, repaint the Washita Motel sign, make cosmetic improvements to the town’s DX and Texaco gas stations and renovate the Village of Canute building into a tourism center and market for local artisans.

According to Route 66 Times, the Cotton Boll Motel was built in 1960. The motel closed around the mid-1980s.
