Neon sign for the West Winds Motel in Erick is restored

The neon sign for the long-closed but still-standing West Winds Motel in Erick, Oklahoma, has been restored and installed, but it may look a little different from how you remember it.

During the restoration process, it was discovered that the business was originally named West Winds Court. So they went with that instead.

The City of Erick received an Oklahoma Route 66 Revitalization Grant of $35,710 from the Oklahoma Route 66 Commission, administered through the Oklahoma Department of Commerce, for the sign’s restoration.

Anthony Reichardt, who videotaped the motel when it was still operating more than 30 years ago, posted a before-and-after image of the sign on the Historic Route 66 page on Facebook.

Here is his video that was uploaded more than a decade ago:

Debbie Kemp now owns the property, and she said the restored neon sign will be lighted nightly.

The West Winds Motel, built circa 1948, was designated to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
