Al-Pac Motel in Pacific was recently torn down

This post is a few weeks late, but the Al-Pac Motel along Route 66 in Pacific, Missouri, met the wrecking ball.

Matthew Lowrey reported on the motel’s destruction in a post on the Historic Route 66 page.

I have to admit the Al-Pac had escaped my notice for many years. But Route 66 Times, as usual, had some background on it. During its heyday, it was known primarily as the Al-Pac Cafe & Motel.

Fred and Jean Miller opened their Al-PAC Cafe in 1942 and later added a Lodge and Motel. The Restaurant burned in 1976. The motel part is still standing, but no longer serving as a motel. […]

Various postcards show the name as the Al-PAC Cafe, Al-PAC Restaurant, Lodge & Motel. The name Al-PAC comes from combining the names of Allenton and Pacific.

Its address was 18652 Route 66, or about three miles east of Pacific. It used the slogans “Food You’ll Write Home About” and “‘Sleep and Eat’ Is Our Business.”

A 1993 article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the motel was allocated $75,000 by the St. Louis County Housing Resources Commission to convert the building into a homeless shelter.

A fire at the motel less than two years later put the shelter out of business for a while.

A 2000 article in the Edwardsville Intelligencer reported that travelers could still rent a room overnight at the motel.
