Calendar of events being updated

Although this will be an ongoing project through at least January, I've already started to update the Calendar of Events tab at the top of this Web site. I've already placed a bunch of 2007 events there. If you know of a Route 66-type festival in your town, e-mail me at route66news@yahoo.com.

More than 3,000 run in Route 66 Marathon

For a first-time event, the Tulsa World Route 66 Marathon on Sunday in Tulsa, Okla., seemed pretty polished. More than 3,000 people participated in the 26.2-mile run and half-marathon footraces, which is an unusually high number for a first-year marathon event. And you know next year's Route 66 Marathon will be even better, because organizers … Continue reading More than 3,000 run in Route 66 Marathon

Mini road trip

For those who think regular motorcycles are too darned big, there are mini motorsports rallies. This one was on Route 66 in Arizona from Seligman to Grand Canyon Caverns. I love AC/DC, but "Shoot to Thrill" seems a tad macho for someone who rides a motor scooter.

This is a church?

The Creek County (Okla.) Board of Adjustment rejected Charles Elliott's request for zoning exceptions so he can host a motorcycle rally on his property off Route 66 near Depew, according to the Sapulpa Daily Herald. Elliott hosted one rally last year, but a second was halted by a court injunction because it violated zoning rules. … Continue reading This is a church?

Rod Harsh at Route 66 TV Online compiled these two televised news reports of the gala in Galena, Kan., that displayed the 1951 International boom truck that inspired the creation of Mater in the movie "Cars." Scenes from the Mother Road 100

Somebody had a video camera at several vantage points during last weekend's Mother Road 100. For more about the ultramarathon, read these reports here and here.

A mother of a marathon

Driving Route 66 west of Tulsa was an eerie experience Saturday night. Every so often, on the side of the road, you'd encounter a lone figure wearing a reflective vest, extra layers to ward off near-freezing temperatures and often a head flashlight to help see through the darkness. Here's one that I saw trudging along … Continue reading A mother of a marathon

Happy ending for soldiers

After the Veterans Day list of U.S. soldiers from Route 66 towns who died in Iraq and Afghanistan, it's nice to have a story about soldiers with happy endings. In Gallup, N.M., members of the National Guard's 1116th Transportation Company were welcomed home with a parade on Route 66. No soldiers were killed or injured … Continue reading Happy ending for soldiers

Meet Mater’s inspiration

It's been the victim of neglect. The odometer reads 99,372 miles, and there's no telling whether they're original. Rust covers the entire body, where it nearly obscures the letters "Tannou" and "Joplin, Mo" on the door. The seats desperately need to be re-upholstered. And it gets its fuel from a storage tank that resembles a … Continue reading Meet Mater’s inspiration

Run, run, run and run some more

The Edmond (Okla.) Sun has a story about participants in the Mother Road 100 -- a 100-mile ultramarathon on Route 66 from Arcadia to Sapulpa that started Saturday morning. The story has nice pictures, too. If you live in eastern Oklahoma, you can still see them until late Sunday morning. They'll still be running ... … Continue reading Run, run, run and run some more
