Rob Ryan of The Times in London attended a sneak preview of a few new rides at Disneyland Paris. If you're vacationing in France, fans of Route 66 and last summer's Disney-Cars "Cars" movie have something to look forward to: Cars: Race Rally is a gentle ride based on the Pixar movie, and will feature … Continue reading Pixar “Cars” ride to open in Disneyland Paris

Rendezvous at the Rock
Check this out. Emily, aka Redforkhippie, was at the Rock Cafe in Stroud, Okla., this week and ran into Route 66 artist Bob Waldmire there. He was giving way copies of this drawing he created. Pictured is the Rock Cafe, along with Waldmire's tan Volkswagen minibus and Fillmore, the VW minibus that appeared in the … Continue reading Rendezvous at the Rock
The sad story of Glenrio
Josh Burton of the Amarillo Globe-News does a bang-up job telling the history of Glenrio, a Route 66 ghost town on the Texas-New Mexico border that recently was named to the National Register of Historic Places. Burton talked to Phil Thomason, who wrote the proposal to put Glenrio on the National Register; Allen Ehresman, whose … Continue reading The sad story of Glenrio
Joliet to launch Route 66 campaign
After seemingly much indifference to the Mother Road for years, the city of Joliet, Ill., is embracing Route 66 tourism in a big way when it launches its Joliet Kicks on Route 66 campaign on June 2. According to the Herald-News: The Joliet Area Historical Museum will have a bunch of interactive displays, including watching … Continue reading Joliet to launch Route 66 campaign
“First Snow” opens to limited release
"First Snow," the thriller starring Guy Pearce that was filmed almost entirely in the Route 66 town of Albuquerque, opened to limited release on Friday. According to some stories I read, the film will gain wider release later. Here's the premise: Stranded after an accident outside a desolate town, Jimmy Munson (Guy Pearce) visits a … Continue reading “First Snow” opens to limited release
Better-quality “Our Town” scene from “Cars”
Someone has posted a better-quality version of the "Our Town" scene from the hit summer movie, "Cars." The Academy Award-nominated song was written by Randy Newman and sung by James Taylor. The previous "Our Town" scene posted on YouTube was OK. But this one is letterboxed, with better quality and sound.
Public service announcement
"Wild Hogs," the motorcycle-trip movie that was partly shot on Central Avenue (Route 66) in Albuquerque, opens today in theaters. It has received a dreadfully low approval rating of 19 percent so far on the Rotten Tomatoes Critics Tomatometer, and is trending downward. You have been warned.
Oscars says no to YouTube and “Our Town”
I was hoping by now to have a video clip of James Taylor and Randy Newman performing their Oscar-nominated song, "Our Town," from the Disney-Pixar movie "Cars," at Sunday's Academy Awards. But it doesn't look like that's going to happen. Variety reports that the Academy has banned YouTube from allowing any video clips from the … Continue reading Oscars says no to YouTube and “Our Town”
“Cars” gets bypassed at Oscars
The hit Disney-Pixar movie "Cars" was bypassed for any Academy Awards victories on Sunday night, falling short in both the Best Animated Feature and Best Song categories. And you can blame it on global warming. But more on that later. "Cars" was favored to win Best Animated Feature, but "Happy Feet" scored a mild upset. … Continue reading “Cars” gets bypassed at Oscars
New “Cars” video game being produced
Author and Route 66 expert Michael Wallis, who portrayed the Sheriff of Radiator Springs in the hit Disney-Pixar movie "Cars," provided some interesting news to me this week via e-mail: This week I spent several hours in studio recording a brand new CARS video game featuring the Sheriff, Mater, Lightning and many of the other … Continue reading New “Cars” video game being produced
