Hard times

This striking slide show from a French YouTube contributor contains scenes from abandoned mining villages, plus ghost towns along old Route 66, including Glenrio. The song is "Hard Time Killing Floor Blues," by blues master Chris Thomas King.

A twist on “Route 66”

The BCB Band of Oklahoma City delivers a country-rock twist to Bobby Troup's "Route 66" in this slideshow. If you like what you heard, go to the band's Web site here, where a lot of Mp3s can be heard and videos can be seen.

Magazine publishers get the Harley & Annabelle Experience

According to an article last week in the Elk City and Sayre newspapers in Oklahoma, Harley and Annabelle Russell of the Sandhills Curiosity Shop in Erick, Okla., entertained 57 members of the International Regional Magazine Association earlier this month. The group was in Oklahoma City for the gathering, but drove a few hours west to … Continue reading Magazine publishers get the Harley & Annabelle Experience

A ‘Hero’ in Amboy

I heard a few days ago that the video for Enrique Iglesias' hit song "Hero" was shot in the Route 66 settlement of Amboy, Calif. Sure enough, it is. Skating 66

Robby Love, aka the Roller Rapper, has posted another excerpt from his as-yet-unreleased documentary from his Route 66 tour last year. He didn't actually roller-skate the entire length of Route 66, but he did roll by some picturesque places. The footage of the Glenrio ghost town is particularly choice.

It was about as good as I'd hoped. There were familiar tunes in … Continue reading An enjoyable stop on the dial

Impromptu kicks

Here's an impromptu performance of "Route 66" by Jason Ringenberg in someone's kitchen. He mangles some of Bobby Troup's lyrics, but it's OK. Ringenberg, in case you didn't know, was the lead singer for Jason and The Scorchers, a great cowpunk band.

A tribute to Route 66

This is a video made by students at St. Martin of Tours Parish Catholic School in St. Louis. A few of the images, coupled with the music, hit me hard. You might find it affecting, also. The music is "Our Town," the Oscar-nominated song written by Randy Newman and sung by James Taylor for the … Continue reading A tribute to Route 66

Shave, but no haircut

Robby Love, aka The Roller Rapper, stopped in Seligman, Ariz., during his Route 66 tour in 2006 to get a shave from the Guardian Angel of Route 66, Angel Delgadillo.
