An online rest stop

Douglas Knight, a photographer based in Amarillo, Texas, has alerted me to his new Route 66 Rest Stop site. It's a place for him to display his photographs from Route 66 and to sell them. He's also selling keychains, magnets, bookmarks and other merchandise. His stuff also is being sold at the National Route 66 … Continue reading An online rest stop

Frank Brooks shot some interesting photographs along Route 66 at small towns in northern Illinois.

Taking 66 in a ’66

The Post-Crescent in Wrightstown, Wis., has a story about the Butz family, who took a three-week journey on old Route 66 in a 1966 Chevrolet Impala. Here's a photo collection from the family's trip. The FAQs with the main story are informative for Mother Road novices, too.

Book review: “Route 66 Railway”

To my knowledge, a book had never explored the relationship between the railroad and historic Route 66. That's no longer the case with the publication of Elrond Lawrence's "Route 66 Railway" (Los Angeles Railroad Heritage Foundation, 176 pages, $49.50). Subtitled "The Story of the Route 66 and the Santa Fe Railway in the American Southwest," … Continue reading Book review: “Route 66 Railway”

Mojave back country

Here's a slide show someone posted of the old mining communities, small towns and ghost towns between Barstow, Calif., and Laughlin, Nev. Many of these towns shriveled up when Interstate 40 bypassed Route 66. Kudos to the Western score, although I can't place which movie it's from.

Book review: “Route 66 Backroads”

Jim Hinckley's gorgeous new book, "Route 66 Backroads" (Voyageur, 208 pages, $24.99), is a guide to more than 40 side trips that use historic Route 66 as a jumping-off point. The book's initial focus remains on 66, with seven chapters on each of the states the Mother Road traverses (the 13 miles of Kansas is … Continue reading Book review: “Route 66 Backroads”

A nice stocking-stuffer

I was at Apertures Photo in Tulsa on Friday when a group of spiral-bound images on the counter caught my eye. It was an Oklahoma Route 66 2009 desk calendar produced by Mary E. Kell of Kell Cafe. It costs $10, and it contains a dozen images from Oklahoma Route 66 (seen above; clock it … Continue reading A nice stocking-stuffer
