Restoring the Meadow Gold sign

Greater Tulsa Reporter Newspapers has a story about the ongoing restoration and re-erection of the historic Meadow Gold neon sign on 11th Street (Route 66) in Tulsa. Much of the information has already been reported, but the article fleshes out new material about the sign's restorer, Claude Neon Federal Signs, and its work: The sign … Continue reading Restoring the Meadow Gold sign

“Fantastic Tulsa Films” airs tonight

I don't know whether there's Route 66 content, but "Fantastic Tulsa Films" -- a compilation of home and professional movies of Tulsa from years ago -- is airing several times in Oklahoma in the coming weeks, including at 7 p.m. today on OETA, the state's public television network. Meadow Gold sign clears another hurdle

The City of Tulsa Board of Adjustment unanimously classified the Meadow Gold sign as a historic monument on Tuesday, thus clearing another hurdle for its restoration and re-erection on Route 66. The sign will be placed on a new building at the southwest corner of 11th Street (aka Route 66) and Quaker Avenue, just a … Continue reading Meadow Gold sign clears another hurdle

“Route 66” in sound and light

This is video of Kari Simmons and Todd Lowry Ensemble, based in Albuquerque. They perform a jazzy version of Bobby Troup's "Route 66," and the footage is sprinkled with night images of that town's Route 66 neon lights. Nice job.

Keep the neon burning

The Sacramento Bee has an interesting story about preservationists' efforts to retain old neon signs in the Los Angeles area. There's not much Route 66 content in the article, but it certainly will be of interest to Mother Roaders because neon lights are so much a part of the Route 66 experience. Here's an excellent … Continue reading Keep the neon burning

Don’t outlaw your neon signs, Albuquerque

The City of Albuquerque, spurred by Mayor Marty Chavez, is considering a sign ordinance that's so financially onerous and controversial that I'm surprised it was proposed at all. In short, the ordinance would outlaw nearly all existing standalone signs and signs that are attached to buildings. This, of course, would include virtually all neon signs … Continue reading Don’t outlaw your neon signs, Albuquerque

No sale

The eBay sale of the Thunderbird Motel neon sign, which came from a Route 66 motel in Miami, Okla., ended with a high bid of $3,850. But since it didn't meet the reserve (which remains unknown), that means no sale.
